This course challenges students to think about how social dynamics and natural resource management affect forest ecosystems. Case studies from around the world will be used to look at the interaction of the traditional, cultural, and scientific concepts that shape forests, including the impact of American management paradigms and consumer choices. Forests can provide wood, carbon sequestration, water, wildlife, food, jobs, cultural benefits, and other goods and services. We consider the impact of power, politics, and markets on the struggle to conserve forest ecosystems and equitably distribute forest benefits.

This course may be used to satisfy the Biological Sciences or Social and Behavioral Sciences breadth requirement in Letters and Science.
